Networking Technologies for Clusters: Where do We Stand and What Lies Ahead?
Abstract: Clusters with commodity multi-core processors and commodity networking technologies are providing cost-effective solutions for building next generation high-end systems. Such systems include HPC clusters, servers, parallel file systems and multi-tier data-centers. This presentation will focus on two emerging networking technologies (InfiniBand and Ethernet/iWARP) and their associated protocols for designing such systems. The emerging OpenFabrics software stack, focusing both these technologies in an integrated manner, will be presented. The strengths and limitations of these technologies in designing next generation clusters will be highlighted. Finally, we will critically examine the future trends of these networking technologies and their applicability for designing next generation petascale and exascale clusters.
